Trump to speak with Xi, Abe as North Korea, steel issues loom


US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday, meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The talks will be held ahead of the bilateral summit at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, from July 7 to 8.

Trump, who promised hard trade during the inaugural campaign, plans to weigh new quotas or tariffs on steel imports for national security reasons and discuss concerns in the G20.

The White House said the phone call will begin at 8 pm Eastern time.


Trump, who met with Xi in Florida in April, said he was willing to cooperate with China on trade issues, but North Korea wanted to use economic leverage to reduce its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. US and allies in Korea and Japan.

Trump, however, has not been doing much to pressure Pyongyang and is feeling frustrated and pursuing trade negotiations.

Trump also urged a clear response to North Korea after talks with President Moon Jae-in on Friday in Washington.

North Korea and the rich and democratic South are technically still at war because the 1950-53 conflict ended in a blackout, not a peace treaty.

North Korea threatens to defend its weapons program and destroy the United States on a regular basis to meet US hostility.
